When my baby was about a week old, some relatives came over at 8:00 p.m. and stayed and stayed and stayed until 11:00 at night. I started mentioning being tired at 9:00. (These relatives live close by and have children of their own. Am I normal to be annoyed at this, or is it my hormones?

I would be annoyed as well. I think I would have just come right out and said...

"well it was super nice to see you guys, I am so tired, lets definitely do this again sometime!"

then they would have had no choice but to get up and leave, you would have made it pretty clear. I do however have friends who will do the hint dropping and I am pretty good at picking up on it, so I leave right away if they start there little ritual. Your relatives were rude to overstay, especially when your child was so so young and you were still recovering.

People should know better!! That was very rude of them to stay so late.

If that ever happens again, mention you're tired and need to be turning in soon. If they're still there in 5 minutes, start turning off lights around the house, change into your PJ's and put on a robe, lock the back door, etc. If they haven't left at this point, head toward the front door, say "It was so nice of you to stop by. I hope you guys have a great week," turn the porch light on and open the front door.

You are completely normal. In times like that, make a rule. I appreciate your visiting, but just so you know, I would like everyone gone by 8 or 9pm. That way you have a chance to unwind before bed too and enjoy the baby some more. Most people I would hope understand this when told.

You are normal. It's inconsiderate for anyone to think that parents of a one week old would have energy to entertain so late at night. you are so polite.

When I had that happen, I didn't let them in the door citing the obvious. I had 10 hours max sleep in 7 days and they are disturbing a very grumpy woman with a newborn made the world revolve around her =).

Was it the first time seeing the baby? If so they were probably excited to see the baby and were just wanting to visit with him/her. 3 hours is a little much considering you probably just got home from the hospital. They should have understood that you were tired and went home after an hour or so not after 3. Completely understandable, hormones or not.

I would have been upset too. Having a newborn is stressful enough!
