Stalin absolutely was a hard-boiled communist. He dropped out of divinity school to "fight for the cause," mostly robbing banks and carriages. Throughout his life he always exhibited an unmatched cruelty.
What he actually wanted for the U.S.S.R. is a bit of a confusing subject because so much of his rule had more to do with his personality than with his political vision. Often he is wrongly described as "paranoid." Stalin showed absolute contempt for his underlings - not fear. He was an absolute alcoholic and ran the U.S.S.R. like his own dysfunctional family.
I'm sure he had grand plans for Russia, but his ego came first. He ground tens of thousands of slaves to human dust in order to build the White Sea Canal. Officially, it was part of his program to modernize Russia. In reality, this useless project was a monument to his ego.
He and Lenin wanted to modernize and industrialize Russia. Stalin's motives are unclear. Did he want to modernize Russia to increase his personal power, or did he actually care about the average, rank and file Soviet citizen? The gravestones of tens of millions of his victims are testament that he cared nothing about average people; therefore, I conclude that he wanted to leave his personal stamp on history.

LOL he was pro-communism. Being a communist leader and all. And what did he want? Like all dictators, world control.
But Stalin was willing to deal with other countries for short amount of time. For example, during WW2, the Soviets were allied with Axis and Allies during different times, even though the Soviets hated them both.
One of the most important things he wanted was self-sufficiency. He didn't want to have to import anything from any other country, because that would make him dependent. And also he wanted to spread communism by funding anti-capitalist/democratic uprisings. With AK-47s (developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov) and MiGs.

Joseph Stalin was a Psychopath, and yes he was very much for communism. So much so that he began to murder mass amounts (estimated over two million) of farmers (called Kulaks) because they were unwilling to give up there crops and live stock to support communism. He sent out his secret police to murder anyone and everyone (including many of his Comrades) whom he thought disagreed with his Ideas.

As one of oppressed country's citizen, I can say that, he was the dumbest person ever on earth. He wanted to stay in the government, so killed many scholars, high-intellegent people. He moved thousands of people from one part of the country to the other. So that people with different cultures cannot join forces to fight against him.... many many bad things he did.
