He is 5'3 125 pounds. He rides extremely well on an xr 80. We ride Hills and deserts and we want a bike preferably with a light. He is also growing a lot and we dont want him to outgrow this bike

If you don't want him to outgrow the next bike atleast for a couple of years, sounds like a 250 cc is about right . You know us guys and no matter how much power you give us we'll always want more . Have him jump on a 125 first just to see how it feels. Let him decide. His age also has something to do with it also. I guess he is fairly young if he is on a xr 80 .A kid never forgets riding with his family. Good luck .

I don't think I would move him from a XR80 to a 250. The Honda CRF150R (the 14" model not the expert) would be a great choice for MX or serious trail riding. If you stay with the trail bikes and go to a CRF 100F or 150F he really won't see much improvment in performance. The CRF150R's seat height is 32.8" and the XR80 28.9" so he should be fine with that. This is one fast little bike though so if he doesn't have the skills be careful.

Well the headlight preferance really narrows down your options. There arent many bike that will fit his current size that he wont outgrow in a year or two. I think yamaha WR250F would be a decent choice if it were lowered a bit. A kawasaki KDX 200/220 are great trail machines as well. The larger XR/CRF models are excellent learning machines, but it wouldn't be long before he would be bored with the power output of them.

personally, if he rides well I would get him a 4 stroke that he can touch the ground with one foot on the peg. My first bike at 11 yrs old was a xr 200. The nice thing about the four stroke is the bike is only as rad as the rider wants it to be. So if he can pick it up if he lays it down its not to big.

See my source and consider the prices. Consider also he may have friends who do not personally own a bike but
would like to learn from your son. He'll soon need wheels for more than just hills and desert.

a ttr 250 or a ktm 250 exc but without a light i would say a ktm 250 sx or any other 250 cc bike he will grow out of a 125 very quickly dont waist your time with them

It's better to get him on a 1125 cc than a bigger bike and this will show you if he really is going to get better and get into a bigger bike latter on. This is a safer rout to go on. The learning curve can end suddenly if he is on a too big a bike for his age. A progressive curve is so much better than a bigger is better... bigger crashes with bigger bikes!

Slow and steady and he will learn the techniques of riding better. Faster too.

any of the 150fs would work for him you can buy light kits for them that just plug in to the stator he would be comfortable on those but he would out grow them in about 3 years or so just pick the one you would feel the most comfortable with him on man if you think he is ready for a 250f then get one for him if his skills are up to it also have either one of them adjusted to fit him only seat height and dampner etc etc maybe look it to a 200f if possible GOOD LUCK SAFE RIDING
