Trade in your gas-guzzling SUV, slow down, only drive when you must. If you make the oil producing cretins eat their oil, they'll have no choice but to lower the prices.

The world oil markets are very volatile.

The price of oil has a lot to do with speculation on what the demand will be in the future. And as it is now, the demand is going to skyrocket. China and India are experiencing an industrial revolution similar to the one the United States had at the turn of the 1900's, and oil is what drives the revolution.

That being said, these countries are demanding more and more barrels or oil every day, and all the facilities that extract and refine oil in all the world can only produce a certain amount per day.

And the world's demand is pushing closer and closer to that threshold. In order to avoid hitting that threshold, OPEC raises the price of oil which, very simply put, makes the world as a whole purchase less gasoline, making sure there is more 'supply' than there is 'demand'

While it is true that these oil companies are making tons of money, much of that money is reinvested into extracting more oil.

Some of the places they are trying to get this oil from are the harshest environments on the face of the earth, and it takes money and resources to get extract the oil from the ground.
