i would normally tip Rm5. Depends on how helpful the service staff is, if he shows plenty of initiative, i give him rm10.
These people earns tiny meager income. Some dont even have enough money to pay for bus fare to work by end of the month. By giving tips they know that taking that extra miles pays off. They could be a better staff in return. Most service staff did not expect any tips, but if we offer it to them they would be happy to accept. Taxi drivers who doesnt use meters, i dont give any tips, honest taxi drivers who uses meters, i would give them tip. By the way, do u know how these people feel when they are given tips? U see gratitude. U never know that small contributions like that could help these people survive living just for another day.

Taxi drivers: no tips (fares here go by distance and a meter is rarely used; at the airport you have to pay for the taxi at the taxi booth and you get a ticket which you hand the taxi driver. The rates/distances are also displayed at the airport, and usually at the hotel they also know how much you have to pay for what destination); a different story if you charter a taxi (say to go to Kinabalu National Park). If the taxi driver goes out of his way to show you the nicest places where to take photos, where to eat etc, tells you more about land and people I'd definitively give a tip, say RM30-50 depending on what you feel is right (the trip is about RM350, the taxi and its driver at your dispoal the whole day...).
Bell-boys etc: here in Sabah tips are not really expected, but if you have lots of luggage, they bring it up swiftly, RM2-RM5.
Local currency is best.

For your info, this is not the way of life to tip taxi drivers in Malaysia. However if your driver gave a good service in providing info and fetch around like a tour guide, it is good to tip him to encourage more honest cabbies to provide value added service.
