Sand and clay are soil. The best soil for most plants is a mixture of sand silt and clay (the 3 sizes of soil particles). Some plants do better in sandy soil, such as cacti. Some do better in clay soil, such as the water garden plants I grow.

Soil particles will have minerals and potassium more than sandy or clay. a Soil is the mixture of all minerals and natural salts in a right amount and the soil could hold and retrieve wetness more. Sand will only absorb water but cannot give it to a plant and clay will always be wet , but it cannot supply water to roots. So soil is the best thing to grow plants .

Sand allows the water and nutrients to flow through it, leaving the plant easily dried out. Clay holds too much water and can drown it. Good soil is a good mixture of sand and humus to better support the plants and hold the necessary nutrients in the soil for the roots.

Soil has many different nutrients in it, where clay and sand do not. Also, allows air and water to move freely around root systems.
