What is an Empire? It is not only military might and superiority. That's one of the tools used to build one. It involves culture too. Alexander's empire is peculiar in that the military conquest of the then world did not survive his death. The empire fell apart at the seams. What did survive was the Greek culture he spread. The period following his death is known as the Hellenistic period or the Greco-Roman Times. Even during Rome’s empire. (This is also all the proof you need that Alexander was a Hellene (Greek). The Roman Empire lasted for over close to 1000 years. There are still very strong reminders of these two cultures across the western world. Spaniards ditto. The most spoken language in the world today is Spanish. Why do you think that is? The British too. But you will note that the amount of time that these empires ruled diminishes as we approach current time. The reason is that the rules of the game have changed. Alexander, Caesar, Timur Lenk, and others could go gallivanting around the globe conquering butchering, converting and "civilising" with out any restraints or permission from anybody. Julius Caesar roamed over Gaul for 9 years despite the opposition of the Roman senate which labelled it illegal. Today you have to deal with your voters with parliament/senate/congress or whatever. You have to face the mass media of the world. We learn of things within seconds of them happening. Back in the good old days of empires very few people had a clue and the majority did not care. Life for empire builders today is very difficult and complicated. My point is that it is too early to name the USA an empire. A super power yes. But an empire no, not yet if ever. But like all things in history it will decline. And nobody so far has come back for second rounds. NOBODY.

Interesting question. No society can last forever. Governments come and go, cultures rise and fall, and the only thing you can know for sure is that the world is always changing. I'd like to think that the U.S. has several good centuries left in it. We are a powerful and rich nation (but then again so was ancient Rome). My main concern right now is that we spread ourselves too thin and involve ourselves in issues that we shouldn't rather than focus on domestic issues.

Eventually, yes. But don't you think China is just as much a "great empire" I mean they have a population much larger than ours and are military minded and expansionist, even more so than the US. Do you think they will go the way of other great empires, like the Buddhist Khmer State that ruled the Indochinese peninsula?

Well, Greece never was an Empire.
Macedonia was under Alexander but remember he was not Greek.
But yes USA is following the way of Rome, Spain or England , but It's going down faster than them.

Not really sure about that.....China and US are to totally different things...the way they think and act....different mind set...And despite popular belief of Chinese, i don't think they will go and attack other countries the way US administration does, any time soon....besides those in their vicinity...
