My first tank.... yeah! Finally ready to plug in my filter. I was waiting for it to pump water through all by itself but hasn't so far.... just loud.

Am I supposed to add water directly into the filter to help it get started? If so how much? A little? To the top? Will it balance itself out? Can't find the instructions.

Thanks from a rookie!

Yes, a little water is required to prime the filter impeller. You will need to do this each time you drain the filter. I usually just fill it up. It will level itself once the impeller is primed.

yes add some water to the filter, to create suction, add enough water until the filter is running on its own, it will balance its self out once the water begins to flow up the intake( the tube that sticks into the tank)

Yes add water to it. All the way to the top, in fact once it has the right balance you will see it do it's job on its own. Don't forget to first rinse out the filter(s)

first fill up the tank with water and make sure you bought some kind of a water conditioner (petsmart has plenty of brands) then go ahead and put in your filter and let it run for about 20 minutes and then you're good to go.

also depends on what of filter you got.

You need to prime it. fill it until it pours out of the overflow. This should be enough.
