I worked for a cleaning company that cleans an office. I empty the trash, my son does recycling, and my sister does the cleaning. We work 3 hours a night, 5 days a week. We all do our job good and out of the blue we all got fired. My boss said things are changing and it doesn’t involve you. Is there anything we could do about this? She wont even tell us why we were fired.

Short answer is, probably not.

Most states in the US are what we call At WIll Employment states. The general concept is that an employer CAN fire an employee for ANY reason, UNLESS they were fired for being in a PROTECTED CLASS. Also being in union or if there is a contract that governs the Er/Ee Relationship can also restrict the ability to terminate.

Most employers will have you sign a paper stating that they can fire you whenever they deam necesary other than for race, sex, etc.

The only thing you can do for being fired or layed off is file for unemployment. The PA website can explain all you need to know. Good luck!

Sadly enough in some states the employer is not required to give an explanation for you being fired. Find out if PA is one of them.
