Which is the right way to say this? Any ideas where I can go to see it?

The best offense is a good Defense.

I think this originally came from Football, with the theory being that the a strong defense could stop the other teams offensive unit and give your unit a short field to play on. It also would refer to a solid defense being able to create turn overs.

The best defense is a good offense. From a previous question, the answer came that no one has been tabbed as the first guy to say it. I believe Vince Lombardi said it in his inaugural Super Bowl win, but he had to get it from somewhere prior to then.

the best defence is a good offence, because if you have a good offence, the enemy will have less to attack you with in the end.

another similar term is "bring the fight to them", meaning don't go on the defensive, attack them as soon as possible, don't give them time to organise against you

this theory is used for all things, not just battles
