Say the government discovered an asteroid heading for earth and will hit us in about 10 years ( and we don't have a way to stop it). Would they just keep their mouths shut since alerting the nation ( world ) would just cause total chaos and a breakdown in society?

I agree that they would wait until the last minute to tell us ( probabaly an astronomer or scientist will spill the beans ) since the world will be one big riot with the world ending within years. I mean what would you do if you knew the world as u knew it was going to be changed for the wosre in x years. I'm sure peoples mindset would drastically change ( screw my Roth account and 401 k ).

There are millions of astronomers, in more than 200 countries around the world. Many of these governments don't like some of the other governments. Do you think that they would all try to keep it secret? Do you think that even if they try, that they really could?

I think that if somebody discovered an asteroid heading for us, then other people would discover it also, a few hours or days later. And in about a week or 2, everybody would know about it.

Well the logical thing to do is calculate where it was going to hit, then spend the next 10 years migrating people away from the coastline (if it will hit the ocean) or as far away from the impact zone as possible (maybe to the opposite side of the planet). The next step would be to build up massive food storage incase the impact knocks up so much dust in the atmosphere that the planet would cool and plants would not get enough light to grow traditional crops. Homes would have to be insulated against the colder climate, and crops that can grow in lower light conditions would be researched.

Not a chance that they would tell us. If any astronomers warned us then the government would just say "We are aware of that asteroid, but it's not going to hit. It's going to come close." Then they would run for the hills!

YES the would tell us BUT NOT till the very last minute! The world would slip into Chaos if they told us as soon as they knew. I think there is a program to try to deflect these planet killers, does it work. No one knows.

They probably wouldn't tell us until we already knew about it from the science community or some other source. Thing is, if we can't stop it, does it really matter if they tell us?

Probably wouldn't say a thing......only because of break down of society.......who would follow the laws of the land if it didn't matter anymore.

Of course! If the government didn't, amateur astronomers would probably tell us.

Actually if they were trying to hide it, then would we not know about it?
