Alaska became The 49Th state in the Union on January 3, 1959. The road to statehood took nearly a hundred years. As Alaska's importance became known to the lower forty eight states, it was still a wilderness to those who lived here.
Through the efforts of many pioneers of Alaska, such as Judge James Wickersham, Territorial Governor Ernest Greuning, Congressional Delegate Anthony J. Dimond, and many others who would become Alaska's political powerhouses such as "Bob" Bartlett, William A. Egan.
After literally decades Dwight David Eisenhower positioned the Alaska Statehood bill before the Congress. Senator Lynden B. Johnson assured Ike that there would be no roadblock to statehood. That assurance was short lived when Virginia Representative Smith, chair of the Rules Committee, attempted to filibuster the bill.
Through some swift maneuvering, Ike moved the bill forward "privileged status", and a vote for statehood went forward.
On January 3, 1959, a thrilled Ike signed the Alaska Statehood Act.
Alaska has always been at the whims of those from outside our state. Today is no different than it was during the push for statehood. today it is ANWR; back in its day, it was out of state commercial fishing rights.
Some things never change.
