Oh, darlin - I'm forever breaking my toes! It's the curse of these little bird-bones of mine...
You can bruise it, you can jam a tendon, you can tear a ligament and they will all hurt like hades... but a break needs an X-ray.
Fact: if it's in the toe area and it's a hairline fracture, you just need to tape it to the next toe for 6 weeks and use firm soled shoes.
If it's a serious fracture, they may need to set the bone. (You SURE don't want it to heal wrong and then deal with pain the whole rest of your life!)
If it's a break behind the toe - even a little bit into the foot, you need something to brace and immobilize the foot. When I was a kid, that meant the whole plaster cast thing - but now they have immobilizing braces they can form to your foot and you can just ace-bandage wrap it on - then take it off for bathing. MUCH more convenient!
Either way - ice it, take Tylenol (not aspirin or Motrin - they thin the blood. If you've busted tiny blood vessels - it will make the bleeding/swelling worse.)
You don't want to play with something that is hurting and turning color... get thee to a physician, hon.
Be well! Peace! --De

The only way to be sure is to have it x-rayed and even then the most they do is tape it to the other ones so you don't move it nuch- Unless you broke more than just the toe(which is a possibility) then they will put the entire foot in a cast- Go to the Dr if it's not better in 3-4 days!

Sounds like you could of broken it but you also could of just stubbed it really badly. If it's just black and blue and hurts then it's probably not broken, but if it's really swollen it probably is. However, you can't do much besides ice and elevation for a broken toe anyways. I broke my toe this past summer and OMG the most painful experience ever. Plus, usually if it's broken you normally can't move it.
Good Luck

do no longer waste money going to the wellbeing practitioner for a broken toe. they could do no longer something for it different than wrap it and the toe next to it at the same time to maintain it from shifting. as quickly as I broke mine, I broke 2 of them at one time, I popped them back into place, then wore a platform pair of footwear to maintain me from bending the toe for about 6 weeks. Ice it right down to take the swelling out, and take tylenol for the soreness. that's what the medical doctors will inform you to do. been there, carried out that.

Yep sounds like you broke it. About the only thing you can do for it is splint it so it wont bend when you walk. soak it every night in hot water.

it doesn't really matter because you can't do much for it anyway, besides trying to make a hard last to put in your shoe to prevent your toe from bending.

You can tell you broke it if it hurts like crazy and it turns black and blue.
