What is a good "home remedy" for spot cleaning spots on the carpet?

Stain removal is tricky. Nothing always works because it depends on how delicate the surface is, whether or not it is colorfast, as well as what the stain is made of.

I have heard that immediately sprinkling salt on a wine stain in the carpet makes it easy to clean....buys you some time till after the party or whatever, the salt soaks up the wine and then you can treat it later.

Protein stains, including blood, egg, and meaty foods like gravy, etc...can all be treated with meat tenderizer made into a paste with a little water, rub into the stain as much as possible without damaging the surface. Meat tenderizer is meant to dissolve proteins in meats, meaning they get broken down a little bit before you eat them, which is how the meat becomes more tender. So meat tenderizer's JOB is to dissolve proteins and this makes it a perfect thing to try on protein stains.

For stains on carpets, I would use something that is specially for carpets, or at least doesn't require a lot of rinsing, so you don't want anything that makes a lot of suds. A dib of laundry soap does seem to make sense but you would have to rinse well. You can also try??? things like shout wipes...these are no rinse, and oxyclean doesn't need a really hardcore rinse either.

Another thing about carpets is that the more you mess around with them, like steam cleaning or spot cleaning, the more you remove any stain repellant that was added to the carpet at the factory. So once you start cleaning the carpets, they keep getting worse.
