Rushing is the process of getting to know the members of a sorority or fraternity to see if you would like to become a member of their organization and if they would like to let you in. The process differs from school to school, but normally you first go to an informational meeting (we call it a shiproom rush) where they explain who they are, what they have done, and what they are all about. Then you normally have more fun rushes such as parties and excursions such bowling or community service. It differs widely so ask one of your upperclassmen friends. S/he will know.

Normally I would dress nice, but not dress up. Dress how you do for classes for a shiproom rush and for a party if you are having one. Follow the example of the members of the organization and if you see them around campus before the rush ask them questions about what is going on and what they are wearing (they like people who are involved)

People are looking for a) people like them, b) people that will make the organization better, c) people who they can get along with. The key to talk to all of the sisters, never say a bad thing about any of them, and to be really genuinely interested in the process. Normally any sister can blackball you (vote no on giving you a bid-- an invitation to pledge-- which means that you aren't given one) so play nice. You need to get along with everyone so it won't happen. I got blackballed by freshman year to a sorority I (luckily) had no interest in because one of the sisters was upset that after stalking my boyfriend for over 2 years he picked me, a freshman, over her. In my bfs frat a kid who was perfect got blackballed because they felt he was too socially awkward (even though all of the brothers are just like the poor kid) So a lot of it is out of your control.

As far as advice, be yourself and try to talk to everyone. Be excited and do your best to show off the best side of you. Also, ask non-greek upperclassmen about the hazing of the sororities you are interested in. Some of them will make your life a living hell and if the school catches what they do to you can be kicked off of campus. Normally national organizations haze much less than locals.

Good Luck!

If you want the truth, it's nerve-wracking. You're being judged constantly on some pretty superficial criteria (that's all there's time for). Most sororities will issue guidelines of what to wear to each event - when in doubt DRESS UP. It's better to be a little overdressed than to look sloppy and careless. Every sorority is different and they're all looking for different things, but in general sororities are looking for attractive, friendly girls with nice manners who present themselves well and fit in with the current group of sisters. Just try to relax and be yourself - pretending to be something else will get you in with the wrong group.
