You maybe should have someone at a music store look at it. I have cut a string before, but you don't want to cut it too short. If the strings are not put on properly, it can cause breakage. No two strings should cross or touch at the peg box. If you are putting a fullsize string on a 3/4 size violin this can maybe be a reason for the string being too long.But you probably should have a teacher or experienced string player look at it.
Also, it depends what string it is as to whether it will unravel, e string is ok. but The others stand a chance to unravel. I believe the one I cut was the wrong size and wound it the box keeping it as long as possible may help , don't cut short , give extra length incase it unravels.

Yes. I would bend the string at the end..back and forth, and back and forth until it breaks. Cutting any string on a stringed instrument usualy will unravel it.

No: don't cut your strings. They need to be wrapped around the peg, away from you, against the side of the peg box.
