"The Rising Sun," by John Toland.

It is about the war from a Japanese perspective, by an American historian who lived in Japan as the child of diplomats, and served as a translator for the war crimes accused.

Toland, incidentally, believed that MacArthur hanged Homma not for the Death March, of which Homma was unaware, but for being the general who defeated MacArthur in the Phillipines. He makes a good case.

This is non fiction but very entertaining and is written from the point of view of both japan and the US.

Japan's Longest Day is a great book about the end of the war. I read it in Japanese and enjoyed it tremendously. I recently saw the English translation @ the bookstore.

I'd recommend "A Boy Called H," which is an autobiographical account of growing up in Japan during World War II. I just wish I could remember the author's name!
