I play games such as Counter-Strike and Guild Wars and both games are dependant on fps (frames per second). I'll get high frames on both until a lot of stuff starts happening (people start shooting, people appear, etc.) When this occurs my fps goes from 100 to 50 and makes the gameplay unbearable sometimes. I've tried to locate the problem and I've figured out it's either my processor or my video card.

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500

I don't know how good or bad either of them are so if someone could please tell me which I could upgrade and get a measurable increase.

First thing I'd do is make sure you have the latest drivers for you video card. http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
I know Guild Wars has very specific system requirements. You may want to revisit them.
Also, make sure you aren't running anything else in the background while playing the games. These programs are very demanding of your resources.
Also, remember these are online games. Your connecting speed and stability will play a major factor too.

You should upgrade both of them as well as the RAM. While the processor isn't that bad it still could do with an upgrade. The graphics card on the other hand is rather old and could defiantly do with an upgrade. Also try tweaking the games settings by putting the details onto a lower level. This will make the games look worse but should improve fps.

I'd dare to say it's your video card.

For some reason I don't recall right now, the Nvidia FX series cards aren't really that good, something to do with the chipsets i think.

I know those games, and a powerful video card *and* lots of RAM do the trick. Although not cheap, a 1 gb ram plus some fair 512mb video card will make your online gaming experience more bearable.

Your processor it's good, maybe not the best if you focus on gaming, but i'll do.

It's all in the combination between Video/Ram.

I suspect that you may need more memory on that system. If the cpu and video card can run at 100 fps normally, the bottleneck is elsewhere.

Without a doubt, it is your video card. I use NVIDIA GeForce as well, but lately youll need something in the 7000s to cut it, maybe a high 6000s series would work as well to save a little money, but I would go with the quality and go with something from the 7000 series.

or even an 8000 if you're crazy intense about your gaming

it is more than likely your video card, you need to update your card to play the games like that with a lot of stuff going on. but updating your cpu/motherboard and memory as well can help a bit
