from my experience, and it's pretty wide in purchasing computers for a few companies, you've actually picked two of the best. sony and toshiba also make some good products if you're looking for a laptop.
I personally have a dell, but there are some dell models I would never buy. We have a few HP desktop and laptops and they are working quite well.
Only because of my experience with many, many dells and knowing their pros and cons, i still with dell. but i am 100% open to HP if they offer me the best value.

Hands down ( DELL)

Check it out though with your common sense. HP can be found anywhere in a local store, and their prices start from 400 to $1,500.

HP doesn't have half the amount of awards compared to Dell, and note that Dell has been the best computer distributor for over 10 years. HP can only dream... But if you can't afford a good PC, then go with HP, since it is the cheapest PC around... Compaq, too, is another crap...

Dell. I would recommend Dell over most PCs today... HP doesn't have great customer service compared to Dell, and yes, Dell won best customer service satisfaction in 2006.

Go dell. If not, go Mac.

The truth is that they are both great PCs. Personally, I've always bought Dell computers ( I now own 3!). I bought the first one in 1999 and it has run perfectly until last month when the video card had to be replaced and 2 weeks later the hard drive crashed. Considering that I practically LIVED on it for 7 years...I'm really impressed. My current PC and Laptop were purchased in 2006 and again, have been performing perfectly. The only problem I've had concerned an upgrade to Norton Internet Security 2007. It conflicted with Sonic's CD driver and I lost DLA (Drive Letter Access) and the boot-up time got really slow. Lost the Norton, and lost the problems.

We use HP/Compaq PC's at work and they too are very dependable. Since the merger their PCs have become a force to reckon with in the market. Compaq used to have "quirky" hard drives and HPs were fairly slow. Now though, HP/Compaq makes a fast PC with a solid hard drive.

I hope that helps.

Niether. Dell use to be good but they got sold and are now pretty much like HP and they are really bad. They try to make there systems to only work with there stuff. So if you want to add a hard drive or CD drive you have to buy it from them. I would suggest Toshiba.

A person who works with calculators said that HP calculators and other products made by them are very cheaply made and are expected to break down very quick. He was right.

Go for a Dell.
