the first answer is 14 minutes

u r payin $0.80 for 3 minutes (the first three). When u deduct that amount out of the $3 you get $2.20 ( which is $3-$0.80); then you divide that number by $0.20 (2.20/0.20 = 11).
At the end you add 11 + 3 = 14 minutes.

If you wanna put everything in a linear operation, here it goes:
$3 - $0.80 = $2.20
$2.20 / $0.20 = 11 minutes
11+3=14 minutes.

YOU ARE ADDING THE 3 min AT THE END BECAUSE YOU SPENT $0.80 FOR THE FIRST 3 MINUTES OF YOUR CALL

For the other exercise, the case is the same, try to follow the exercise I jut completed for you to understand the situation and solve it for yourself. I can tell you that the answer is 10 minutes so you can check at the end if you get it right. Good luck and let me know if you were able to get it.

Take care

1.) let x : the number of additional minutes Matt can talk

0.80 + 0.20x = 3.00
0.20x = 2.20
x = 11 additional minutes
11 + 3 = 14 minutes in total
So Matt can talk for 14 minutes.

2.) let x : additional minutes Anna can talk
0.60 + 0.15x = 1.35
0.15x = 0.75
x = 5 additional minutes
5 + 5 = 10 minutes in total
So Anna can talk for 10 minutes

Matt can talk for 14 minutes
$ 0.8 for 3 minutes + $2.2/0.2 = 14

Ann can talk for 10 minutes.
$0.6 for 5 minutes + $0.15 * 5 = 10

.80 * 3 + .2 (x-3) = 3.00

1.35 - .6 *5 - (.15)(x-5) = 0
