Hi,

If the car has hydraulic lifters, the lifter should not tick unless it is varnished and "stuck" or there is a lack of oil or the oil is contaminated, sometimes with water. Oil level is easy to check Varnish can be assessed by reomoving the oil fill cap and peering into the top of the engine. If you see a brown varnish coating on the stuff below the oil fill cap or worse...crud, avoid this car. If it is contaminated oil, here is a quick tip. Warm up the motor. Pull the dipstick and touch the tip of the dipstick to the hot exhaust manifold. If the oil smokes off the manifold, it is probably ok. If it hisses or crackles, it has something in it that is not correct..maybe water or gasoline. Either case shows more problems than a simple tick.

Not much help, but a couple easy diagnostic tips, I hope.

berst,
Phil

My advice, do not buy it. the lifters are a rather integral part of the engine, and maybe I'm wrong, but I'm sure it didnt roll of the factory line with the lifters "ticking". Alot could go wrong and it could leave you with costly repairs. Just bide yout ime, you will find a good deal.

And BTW, that whoel 3 day "lemon-law" thing. Dont believe it. You were told of the issue, you are aware of it, and you will likely buy the car in "as-is" condition. the guy wont give you your money back and take the car, and if you take him to court, you will lose. Not trying to sound mean, but seriously, no Judge will rule in your favor, it was an existing problem and you were informed of it, you wont win. just trying to save you a little heartache. My advice, dont buy it.

if it is the lifters it is probably normal, but allot of car salesman will use the excuse of it being the lifters when it is actually something more serious, you could request that he let you test drive it and take it to a mechanic for inspection before you buy it. my best advice would be don't buy it without it being looked over really good first, and remember there is a 3 day lemon law, so if it breaks down after you do buy it take it back immediately if it is within three days. honestly i would have to go with the majority here and say , don't buy it.

Hydraulic Lifters get sludged fail to pump up. Rislone yellow plastic bottle cleans and frees up sticky lifters. This product works wonders and is thinner than properly-known oil purely upload a bottle 500 miles earlier your next oil substitute. Then upload a million/2 bottle consisting of your new clean oil. power a on an identical time as once you get close on your next substitute upload the different a million/2 bottle. purely determine your noise is unquestionably lifter and not something decrease interior the engine.
