If you got fired from a retail job and then you apply for positions, what would you put in the box of the application where it says"Reason for leaving"? Or when the interviewer asks you if you have ever been discharged from a previous job? I worked at a Clothing store in Houston Texas for 4 years and whenever my friends and family came to buy things, I would give them higher discount rates than normal. When my manager found out, he fired me on the spot. What should I do for other positions? Should I hide the fact that I got fired or should I tell them the truth. Please HELP!!

You are lucky you were only fired and not arrested for stealing, which is what it was to give out a discount. It is not your store or your money and you have no right to create a policy to suit yourself with someone else's money.

No, you don't lie about getting fired. Lying on an application that you then sign as being truthful will get you fired again. It is better to face the music and say "terminated" and then when they ask, you say you offered a discount and you now see the error of that and you see they had no other option but to fire you. You own your behavior.

Well lets look at it from both views. Would you hire someone that put on their application they gave big discounts to family and friends possibly causing the store to lose money on those items? Especially when there are 100 other people applying for the same job and they never did such a thing? Now lets look at from the other view. You lie. Interviewer calls and finds out you were fired. Now you are a thief and a liar who has no honor at all...what is next? This is how a criminals life starts. So now is the question. How you get your honor back? How do you get to the point where you didnt just waste the last 4 years of your life and you have to spend the rest of your life covering up that mark by becoming a liar. Only one way i can think of. Go back to the clothing store and speak to the manager that fired you. Ask for your job back and tell him you will pay him back whatever he feels is a reasonable amount (or if you know the actual amount) to be taken out of your check everypay day until the debt is satisfied. Tell him you want the job back so you dont turn into a liar and a theif and eventually end up in a life of crime. If he doesnt hire you back, and you cant get a job in retail anymore because of that blemish, you will need to go into something where they dont really care about your last job, like becoming a car sales man, or real estate agent. (they hire everyone.) In fact one of those jobs is probably good for you as it will teach you about what happens when you give discounts....it cuts into your paycheck.

You will be found out if you lie on your application, sooner or later. It's better to always tell the truth, no matter how bad it may seem to you. Show them that you have corrected yourself from that lapse in judgment. It is still going to be an uphill battle for you to get a job handling any money, but at least you will have a clear conscience and not have to worry about them finding out your lies.

Never EVER admit to being fired! The people who do the hiring are graded on how well they pick employees. If you admit to being fired - you're damaged goods. Get a friend or relative (preferably a married sister, so she has a different last name, to "pretend" she was your former supervisor.) Give her a "script" that says wonderful things about you, along with a good reason for leaving.

I hate to advocate lying, but in this case, even Jesus would!

Hey there is no need for lying EXCEPT.....
If you got fired and you know it was your fault definatly lie if it wasn't tell the truth if they ask tell them exactly what happened can't hurt, what ever decision you make if they don't hire you for that reason then next time say the oppisite!!

Good luck!!

Lying is never good. To avoid that situation I would probably just leave that off your resume. Good luck!

It's best to tell them because they will want to check with your previous employer.

Do not include that job. List other experiences.

You can always say "personal differences".
