First you want to figure out what simple task you want the contraption to do, and then use the following simple machines to work together to accomplish this task.
> Inclined/declined plane
• Lever
• Fixed pulley/moveable pulley
• Screw
• Wheel & axle/offset wheel & axle
• Wedge
In 8th grade I made a machine that blew out a candle by popping a balloon (loud and people are attracted to fire) and one 2nd place at my school. It had all kinds of rolling balls similar to the ones in the you tube link below. Some better ones I've seen do something for a purpose, like crush a soda can, start a toaster, eggs, and coffee (much more complicated), turn on a light switch, feed a fish (people love live animals in exhibits), or something from Wallace and Gromit. Be creative and have fun.

I did one when I was in high school.

My best advise is that when you are planning your project you should work backwards. Start at the end with what you want your machine to accomplish and then move step-by-step towards the first step in your chain reaction.
