Hi I'm renting a room in an older three bedroom house. The home does not have any smoke alarms installed. Im wondering if anyone knows if that is against the law or is it the owners right to decide on having them? The house is in Southern Californa. I have looked on the internet but couldnt find the answer to that question. If i were to call the fire dept I wonder if they would fine the owner? Thank you

Why don't you suggest that they be installed before calling the FD? If the landlord still isn't interested you could hint that it is the law. If it still doesn't sink in and you don't want any hard feelings you could get some yourself.

As far as a fine, I don't know. I'm guessing they'd explain the law though. And I'm 99.9999% they are required by law.

I am not familiar with California law. To find out if they are required, call your local municipal building inspector. The local municipality might also have an ordinance regarding rental units, and that ordinance might require them. The ordinance might also provide fines for violations.

Smoke alarms are a good thing to have. The battery operated ones are inexpensive, easy to install, and you can take them with you when you leave.

If you call the Fire Dept., they will tell you the alarms are a good idea, and they might know the local law. Your local building inspector is the best place to start.

Regardless of the law in your area, it is best to have smoke detectors and CO detectors in your residence. Your local fire department will tell you that they will save your life. Please go to a local home center and check out those made by Kidde. A smoke detector will set you back about $12, and a CO (carbon monoxide) detector will be about $20. For less than the cost of pizza and beer on a Friday night, you can be safe. In Illinois, smoke dectectors and CO detectors are the law.

Of course, if you were concerned you could buy yourself a battery operated one and take it with you to your next accomodation.

In Sydney Australia smoke detectors are mandatory under the building code... California is such a backwater though, I suppose anything goes.

I don't know if they are mandatory in that state, however you can buy the battery operated ones for ten to fifteen dollars and they take only a few minutes to install.
