I missed the first 10-15 minutes of LOST last night. Can someone please explain the thing with Sawyer and the Rabbit (I understand the allusions to 'Of Mice & Men', but not the context of why this relates to Sawyer and the Others)

they showed him the rabbit and made it "die" as evidence that if Sawyer got worked up, the pacemaker they told him they had fitted into him would kill him just as it did the rabbit.

what rabbit, why the hell do you have to make the show complex? besides i dont recall any rabbit.
