In Lewis Carroll's Through The Looking Glass, Tweedledum says to Tweeledee, "The sum of your weight and twice mine is 361 pounds." Then Tweedledee says to Tweedledum, "Contrariwise, the sum of your weight and twice mine is 362 pounds." Find the weight of Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

let tweedledum's weight = x
let tweedledee's weight = y

the first part
y + 2x = 361

the second part
x + 2y = 362

now, isolate for one variable, I chose to isolate for y in both equations

y = 361 - 2x
y = (362 - x)/2

since both equations equal to y, they are equal to each other

361 - 2x = (362 - x)/2

now solve for x

722 - 4x = 362 - x
-3x = -360

x = 120

Now that you have the value of x, plug that value into either equation, doesn't matter you'll still get the same answer and that'll give you the other guys weight

y = 361 - 2x
y = 361 -(2)(120)

y = 121

Therefore

Tweedledum's weight is 120
Tweedledee's weight is 121

The hardest part of these types of questions is setting up the right equations, once you get that down you're home free!

1) x + 2y = 361
2) 2x + y = 362

multiply 1st by 2 and get
3) 2x+4y = 722

subtract 2nd
4)3y = 360

div by 3
5) y = 120 tweedledum's weight

subtract from 2)
6) 2x = 242

divide by 2
7) x = 121 tweedledee's weight!
