The Colonists were upset with rules imposed by Britian such as the Quartering Act, the Intolerable Acts and various taxes on items like tea, glass and paper which supported Britian and British soldiers.

A decent respect to the opinions of mankind required that they should declare the causes which impelled them to the separation, so they wrote the Declaration of Independence to explain it.

It's a hard read at first, but worthwhile.

Cause someone stood up and said, "We ain't pay'in no more taxes without reaping any benefit from them. Taxation without representation baby. That really pisses us off.
