Usually a person is unhappy and trying to fill the void in their life. All of this just creates more problems.

Urges aren't a "Why" kind of question. They are a "What do you do with it" question. It's not the obsessive thought we can always control as much as the compulsive behavior.

Clearly there is some kind of reward loop happening in someone's brain that triggers the urge. Many people who work in Addiction recommend interrupting this cycle when it happens, to create a new "outcome". Like when you have the urge to gamble, you do "(something)" instead. But I don't think it is fair to say that people need to "grow up". If it were simply that, then there would be a lot less compulsive behavior.

When you mature, you realize there are more important things that drinking, gambling, etc... Not everyone reaches that point, however. Some people choose to spend money on those things before they take care of their responsibilities, but if you have the time and money to enjoy going out (and don't drink and drive!) there is nothing wrong with it.

"Growing up" doesn't necessarily mean you no longer have those urges, it means that you can handle them, and only act on them when the time is right.

Everyone wants to have fun but you have to decide that somethings are better if you change what you consider fun.
Like a picnic in the park. Or a boat, water ski trip to the lake with a BBQ. Just hanging out with friends. And saving your money and buying a new car. No hang overs or regrets.
No giving your money away with nothing in return.
Some have gotten married and changed what they decided was fun. For something a lot more rewarding.

I don't like to do any of those things, but to some it's fun. The same urge that makes you want to play pinochle, or paint unicorns, or whatever it is you find enjoyable is the same urge that makes someone want to go to the party, or gamble, or whatever. It's all in what floats you boat, because no one likes to be in the water!

You can be grown up, a perfectly responsible adult, and still enjoy all those activities. As long as they're not done to extremes like gambling away the mortgage payment or drunk driving. They're fun to do.

None of those activities are necessarily "wrong" until they're done to excess.
