mtDNA is the DNA located in the mitochondria of a cell. mtDNA is only passed on through the mother. Thus, any diseases that are related to mtDNA can only be inherited from the mother.

Mitochondria and choloplasts are the only organelles of the cell that have their own DNA.

When something is said to be inherited maternally they are refurring to the mother. The mother produces the egg which has mitochondrial DNA, while the father donates the sperm which is nothing but genetic DNA, the sperm has no mitochondrial DNA.
