You have a problem, either with a corrupt BIOS or a corrupt OS. If you get through the BIOS screen (black screen with written information on it) quickly but then your PC hangs at the colored (oops, screen of color) for a long time then your OS is having difficulty loading drivers. I would right click on "my computer", then "properties", "hardware", device manager and see if you have any yellow exclamation marks. If so, try updating the drivers; if not, delete a few devices starting with sound controllers. Don't worry, they'll come back when your PC boots back up. Do them 1 at a time, if you hit on a "bad" one the PC will boot quickly until it starts to load the driver. You will know this is the problem. It is possible that one of your devices have failed.

Good Luck

I don't know enough about your PC to be specific. So, all I can do is tell you about a situation I had. My Dell came with Norton Internet Security 2005 installed on it. When I got ready to renew my virus update subscription, I also "upgraded" to Norton Internet Security 2007. It was a huge mistake as my boot-up time more than doubled and I lost Drive Letter Access (DLA) to my CD Burner due to a software conflict between Sonic (Roxio) and Norton.

I got rid of Norton completely (they have a great uninstaller on their website) and downloaded the free version of Avast. My PC boots up incredibly fast and the Avast anti-virus software works great so far (almost 6 months).

Also, I use and recommend Registry Fix (I hear Registry Mechanic is good too), and AdAware SE (spyware scanner). Nothing speeds up a PC like keeping the registry free of entries that point to non-existant software.

Good Luck!

Hi. That is obviously too long. Depending on your processor speed and what starts up on boot, two minutes would be almost acceptable. I assume you went into msconfig under the 'Run' and stopped unnecessary programs from starting, but look at the Task Manager. How many processes are running? More that 35 or so? Go back and stop some more in msconfig.

Not enough info to go farther than to say exactly what is wrong but, you need to download and burn http://pclinuxos.com and then reboot from the CDrom.

If that boots normally like in about 2 to 3 minutes, (really boots lots faster, when installed to the hard drive!), then it means the hard drive and the OS on it, are flubbed up.

I would then diagnose the hard drive and OS. but, having defragged it, and it runs slowly, you might buy a new drive.

Best of luck!

many times a slow boot can be attributed to a mangled videocard driver ... maybe get drivercleaner if u have an nvidia or ati card, run that, and then reinstall the driver ... also u can run bootvis and it will show u where the hangup is occuring ...
