i recently was awarded a job as a welder ? millwright in a chemical facility. i went through a drug screen,physical,aptitude and phsycological test and passed all. i signed a form allowing my employer to receive my criminal background record, and was called a day later and told congragulations youv'e been awarded the position. i was told that i would be on probation 45 days before i could become a member of the united steel workers, this was acceptable and i began work. my 3rd day on the job, my foreman informed me the plant manager wanted to have a meeting with union officers and myself about a traffic infration on my background. although not a member yet union officials were outraged that i was going to be let go for a non felony speeding ticket..not to mention iv'e never had a felony. i was told by every union member that they wanted me to stay and even called the international in detroit but because i was not a member thier hands were tied. i was let go at the end of the day and to

I don't think so, I would go to the labor board and get an attorney.

yes the Unions hands are tied because you are not a Union member yet
you are a "at will" employee until the 45 day probation is up
your employer doesn't need a reason to let you go during the probation period

most likely that is not the real reason you were let go.
they did not want you.
you basically have no legal protection.
since you weren't in the union yet.
unless you were discriminated against based on an illegal factor (your age, national origin, etc.) then you probably have no recourse. but you are a fool to believe they fired you because of a speeding ticket. that was just an excuse. do you know the real reason?

I don't think a speeding ticket is a good reason to let you go but, since you are in a probationary period, they can let you go for any reason they want.

The only way I can see why they would do this is if you have to drive their vehicle on the job, and their insurance co. won't cover you.
