Okay, I just recently bought 2 parakeet's that I belive are both male. They weren't hand raised so they're a little bit stubborn. At frist my blue one would let me pet it just on the back and not even that he hesitated ALOT the first day I tried to pet him. My green one was frightend. And then one day my friend thought he knew what he was doing and grabbed my blue one from the back it went crazy and they both flew out. Eventually we caught them. Now (3 weeks later) the blue one won't even let me touch it and is very odd and clumbsy. While me green one is timid and curious and very little let's me touch it. ON THE OTHER HAND........ my friend, is getting a guine pig for her birthday and I thought "wow that would be better than these stinking no good birds" so what do I do? I feel like giving up. But the green one seems able to handle should I give up the blue one and work with the green one, or give them both away and buy a guine pig? Please help I need your advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never had birds, but I have a male guinea pig. I love him, he's adorable, but I'll be darned if he isn't the messiest, noisiest little guy! And when I say little, I mean actually quite large! He requires a large cage, a large ammount of bedding, a large ammount of food --and you have to make sure his diet is balanced (hay, dry food, fresh fruits and veggies, salt wheel, water with vitamin supplements...). He needs a house to hide in, toys to chew on, and they like attention! The cage needs to be cleaned twice a week, poop scooped every day (I admit I don't scoop as often as I should). And on top of all that, he is noisy! He squeaks and clucks and grinds his teeth...the squeaking is LOUD! It drives my husband nuts. So keep all of that in mind before making a decision. Please don't get a guinea unless you are fully prepared to care for him. And by the way? Life span is 5-7 years!!!!!

You really should not just give up on them nor should you just give away the blue one and keep the other. If you seperate them, it could be difficult for the parakeets to handle. This would be similar to taking you away from your best friend and then expecting you to be happy and not at all lonely. It sounds to me like they need more time to adjust and to gain their trust in you. You are a lot bigger than them so they must learn that you will treat them right. Try spending more time with them during the day and give them a lot more time. When your friend grabbed the blue one, it probably scared it having a stranger coming at him and your friend may have handled him to hard or incorrectly. They need to adjust to you before adjusting to anyone else. If the blue one is still acting "odd" and clumsy, you need to take it to a vet. It sounds like your friend may have hurt it, its ill, or it got hurt when it flew from the cage. Your bird could be in pain. Guinea pigs are a lot of work to tame and youll still have to give it a lot of time to get used to you.

you should buy a guinea pig for sure! They are an awesome pet, but you have to get it young and really put a lot of time into taming it or you'll never be able to pick it up! Don't waste your time on un-affectionate birds. You need your pet to show you some love...

guinea pigs bite also if they are not hand raised and they are a lot messier then birds. I have had both. I loved my guinea pig to death but he pooped like crazy. I think that you should stick to the birds and keep working with them since you have already bought them.
