Six Flags Over Texas is great and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor water park next door. It's not as kiddie as Disney. It is in Arlington, TX and there is The Palace of Wax and Ripley's Believe it or Not right next to it. It has a lot of cool things (read gross) that boys like. Then there is the Fort Worth Zoo (ranked 2 in the nation) a few miles down the road. Depending on when you go, there is also the Rangers stadium across the street and the Cowboys and the Stars nearby. There are also many good lakes in the Dallas/Ft Worth Area if you like fishing and Medieval Times or The Magic Time Machine are great entertaining places to eat. There is a great museum and Art district. Ft. Worth Museum of Natural History has the Omni Max Theater and a Planetarium.

Pick a city with great history and an interactive museum, he'll have fun and learn about stuff that is important. IE the Powerhouse in Sydney or The Canberra Dinosaur museum, and Science place is a full day's outing. These cities offer some nice drives, walks, bike rides, water activities and climbs/hikes.
Please take your 12 year old somewhere he will gain knowledge, not just thrills!

Kinda depends on the boy. Theme parks, water parks, fishing trips, camping trips are a few possibilities that come to mind. Just make it something that both of you can participate in and enjoy. Sometimes kids that age like to take a friend along on a trip.

12 is still a perfect age for Disneyland / Knotts Berry Farm / Universal Studios / Hollywood, CA
To Fred, while education and culture are important ... at 12 you should still just be a kid.

I went to Hilton Head Island,SC. There are cool hotels and beaches but also fun things to do like parasailing, mini golfing, etc etc.
