That's a hard one-depends on your definition of sadness. "Where The Red Fern Grows" is a "traditionally" sad book. "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver is one of the saddest to me-the ending still haunts me.

Is the 'Half blood prince' a sad book for you? There are sad events but on the whole it's not a sad book. For me a sad book is 'Bridges of Madison county'. Also 'The time traveller's wife' great and surprising book.

Yeah, I agree with Persiphone_Hellecat, Frankenstein by Shelley broke my heart. I cried for like a day.
Bridge to Terebithia is heartbreaking as well.
Phantom by Susan Kay broke my heart. I cried for the last 100 pages!
Phantom of the Opera by Leroux broke my heart! I love Erik, and I still cry when I read that book, even though I've read it like 100 times!
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has always made me cry as well. I love both Henry and Edward for different reasons, and so that book gets to me everytime I read it.
Hope this helps!

Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
I was weeping like a baby by the end. Its very sad, but also very happy, funny, dramatic, romantic. It's long, but furiously entertaining and it just zips by.

I must also suggest Frankenstein. It might be one of the saddest books in the world.

I read tons of books, and it may sound a little strange, but the only book to make me sob like a little girl was "The Green Mile" by Stephen King.
The movie got to me too.
