International Womens Day was created by socialists back in 1911, to protest sexism against women and to commemorate the role of women in the fight for social change.
They picked March 8 because there were two major political protests led by women that happened on that day - on March 8, 1906 the women of Petrograd, Russia led a major protest against the absolutist tyranny of Czar Nicholas III and on March 8, 1908 ladies garment workers in New York City called a general strike.
Today there is still widespread discrimination against women in every country in the world - and, in every nation, women are very involved in protests against all types of injustice.
In other words, the holiday is just as necessary as it was in 1911.

I absolutely agree. It always seemed an oxymoron to me that this should exist in North America. It's very nature implies that there are a group of women who feel inferior and unappreciated and have to wine about their rights, blah, blah.
I could see the relevance of "women's day" in the 50's when women wore aprons and adorned the home, but come on . . .
Anyone who listens to the news, reads, travels, see films, goes to university can see that women RULE! This "women's day" is way out-dated. Use the publicity and placard-waving for abandoned and neglected pets please, or the homeless, or abandoned horses. Women are out there doing their thing and showing by their empowered lives that they are not downtrodden.

I definitely agree. This parallels the problem with Black History Month. Although these holidays are well-intentioned, they just end up illuminating the differences between race and gender. It's a great way to force a dividing wedge by showing that women somehow "need" this day.
I posit that as long as people continue to define themselves merely by their gender or race, prejudice will still thrive.

International Women's Day is a focal point for women around the world to speak out and speak up. Yes, there are still women who have no security. Think beyond the confines of your own white bread world.

Why get rid of this day- when March is Women's History Month. People, people, people, we need to remember the cliche- If you don't know your history, you are doomed to repeat it! We celebrate the day to inspire hope to those in other countries that they will be treated as equal as we have in other countries like the U.S. Let's not get rid of any of these celebrations- it's purpose is not to relive the past but to build hope for the future.

What ought to probable be incorrect with a woman needing a profession and a kinfolk of her very own? You consult with this choose for as a "syndrome." it is not a ailment! females have each good to need a profession, a companion, and young ones. adult adult males have had this for hundreds of years. Why won't have the capacity to females have all of it, too? If a woman having a profession "hurts" her husband and/or infants, then how does a guy having a profession harm his kinfolk? you do no longer ask that question. you're saying if females choose for equality, they ought to "conflict it out, common and sq.." precisely what replaced into common approximately us no longer having equality for thousands of years? And precisely what's "common" approximately how females are taken care of now? you're saying the way adult adult males" conflict it out" is common, yet this is actual a remember of opinion, isn't it? there's a lot of jobs i've got no longer gotten employed for by way of fact i replaced right into a woman. what's common approximately that? additionally, you extremely have been given way off-subject remember of your substantial question. that question for sure isn't a real undertaking to you. While I see your point, it is INTERNATIONAL women's day. Remember that in many countries women are not considered equal to men. I don't think that International Women's Day, Black History Month, etc. should be gotten rid of but we should have a holiday that is People's day or Humans day or something that celebrates all people, not just select groups.

We need to affirm that sexism exists because it does. It might not be prevalent in your life, and that's good for you. But in areas of the world where woman are very unequal, a day like this helps greatly.
