I have a PC max RAM of 4 gig. I have 3 gig in it right now with a config. of 2x512 in the first 2 slots , and 2x1gig in the next 2 slots. If I switched the 1gig to the 512 slots , would it make a difference? This way the 1 gig chips would be at the start, and the smaller 512 would be at the rear(so to speak)...would it matter?

YES... you always want your highest speed modules first... Ram modules are like so... 1 3 2 4... So you would want your 1 GIG in 1 and 2 and your 512 's in 3 and 4.

Anything over about 1 gig in Windoze isn't going to make a huge improvement in speed. Windoze doesn't allocate memory space once the drivers are loaded. It will fill up the memory you have and then bounce back and forth on your virtual memory (hd) leaving you with a couple of gig of "unused" memory (for the most part anyway). The type and speed of the clock function is what will improve your performance. You may be able to get an increase in speed by applying a little more voltage to the memory. This is found in your BIOS. The default is 2.5V but quite a bit of memory requires 2.6 or 2.7 volts to run properly. Check out the type of memory you have, it's voltage requirements and see if your BIOS is set correctly.

Don't confuse your memory voltage with your CPU voltage!

Good Luck

Why not just put the 2, 1 gig sticks in the first 2 slots and see how it works. 2 gig is enough memory even if you are running a 64 bit operating system. It's worth testing anyway.

Hi. Pretty sure Michael Burns is right. The data loaded into the first encountered RAM will run faster until the third is encountered. Which may not happen.

Your ram can only run as fast as the slowest ram, so if you have some 400mhz fsb 512 sticks of ram, and some 800mhz fsb 1gb sticks of ram, the 1gb could still only run at 400mhz

Yes! Switch them! Be safe!

Hope you have a wrist strap (ESD- Electro Static Discharge), as our bodies hold >20KV!
