Buddy Rich was a super skilled drummer. If your looking for a album with a showcase of skills, Buddy Rich is a good choice, or Poppa Jo Jones too.
BUT..................
If your looking for a creative and artistic drummer, with great skills too, then you should really hear Elvin Jones. Elvin Jones was much more than rhythm. Jones was a creator, who pushed the soloists to explore and create art. Most albums with Jones on drums happen to be great albums, it's no coincidence.
Any album with Elvin Jones on drums is great. Especially in the early to mid 60's, when jazz was very adventurous.
Try...
Wayne Shorter-Speak No Evil http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:as3gtq1zbu44 Listen closely to the drums and bass, especially during the song Witch Hunt. It is like a continous stream of creativity, constantly moving and changing. A great moment of music.
Grant Green-Matador http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:8zfxlfjegcqp Jones gets a unaccompanied solo on the album, and is great all the way through.
Andrew Hill-Judgment!-http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:87rp28or054a
Rahsaan Roland Kirk- Rip, Rag, and Panic-http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:8vkxlffe5cqo
John Coltrane-the 1961 Complete Village Vanguard Recordings-http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:ce1ibk09kakc My all time favorite album, or definitly one of them.
Besides being great drum albums, these are just great albums (in my opinion, and many other listeners).

A old LP called "Burning Beat" by Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa from Verve records 1962. It is very hard to find on CD. In fact, I've been looking for it for years now! They did a record or two before this one that are out on CD but this one is very special. You can find original copies of this record on Ebay then you can convert it to CD or MP3. I've been a professional drummer since 1977 and it still floors me!
