Paintballing can be a legitimate source of pain. While you should be wearing a mask, the biggest pain comes when it hits you in the arms or legs (because they are uncovered) or in the fingers because they are so thin. To save yourself from this, you can rent a full body suit and wear gloves

Be careful. Be alert. Depending upon the weapon, the paintball can cause the loss of vision, if a direct hit on or near the eye, that's why you wear eye protection when engaged in this exercise. Also, it is good to wear a nylon or leather jacket which would lessen the sting of the hit by the paintball. Groin protection is a must, because no one wants a direct hit on the penis or vagina. I could go on, but I think you are getting the picture! Bottom line: CAUTION at all times.

Close range, yeah. Get closer than 20 feet and it can hurt.
I got shot in the back in indoor paintball and it almost made me cry like a baby.
I've never had it hurt when playing outside, though.

Yes, it can leave bruises. Make sure you're wearing all of the protective gear, but there will be so much adrenaline that you might not feel anything until later. It might be one of the most exciting things you will ever do (unless you've done bungeejumping=).
