I am actually answering this question using the notebook I bought off of ebay!!! I was definitely VERY skeptical at first, but I looked for a seller that had 2 things:
*100% positive feedback
*who also provided a return policy for the notebook
I ended up buying a Dell Inspriron 1501 with microsoft office and paid about $500 including shipping, if I had bought this from dell it would have easily been at least $900. Good Luck! Just so you know this was a brand new notebook, not a used one.

Depends on what you mean by cheap. I've seen some in the neighborhood of $550. Try Dell or Gateway and check out sales at Wal-mart/Target and warehouse clubs like Costco or Sam's if you're a member.
Also try http://www.pricescan.com and http://www.gradware.com/. Gradware will give you student discounts which are really good.

Dell.com has a nice notebook for under $900 right now, comes with Vista Home Premium.

They sell notebooks at the dollar store and at Staples. Wait, the paper filled kind? Or the electronic kind?

Check eBay for a used Mac or buy a refurb from the Apple store.

Try www.microcenter.com. They have pre-built laptops from $500 that have decent setup. They also have 18 stores nationwide.

I think Best Buy has a great selection with fair prices. They also offer a warrantee with most, if not all, of their products.
