Hobbit, then, just like the movies:
Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
Return of the King
The Hobbit was written and published in1937; The Lord of the Rings was a long project dating back to the 1910s but was finished and published in 1954-55.

Oh baby I got that one answered! I have this book and it is somewhat hard for me to follow unless I write everything down, like the characters and what side they're on.
The book before The Hobbit is The Silmarillion. It talks about the life of Elron WAY before he was born. Like his great grandpa in elf years. It's a good book. I recommend it. I'm glad you asked.
The Book of Lost Tales is the title of a collection of early stories by J. R. R. Tolkien, and of the first two volumes of Christopher Tolkien's 12-volume series The History of Middle-earth, in which he presents and analyses the manuscripts of those stories, which were the earliest form of the complex of fictional myths that would eventually comprise The Silmarillion. Each of the Tales is followed by notes and a detailed commentary by Christopher Tolkien. The Book of Lost Tales is not the same as that in The Silmarillion.
Oh a list: Silmarillion, Hobbit, Lord of the Rings: The fellowship, two towers and return of the king.

The trilogy itself is:
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
The Hobbit does take place before the trilogy; however, it is not part of the trilogy. It is about a separate story revolving around Bilbo, so if you feel a little lost, that's probably why. Don't confuse The Hobbit with the actual trilogy about the Ring. (I read The Hobbit first too, and it took a while for me to figure out that it wasn't part of the story I was used to!)

the hobbit
the fellowship of the ring
the two towers
the return of the king.
the hobbit is way before the trilogy but it does tell how bilbo found the ring. Also, the silmarrilion takes in middle earth. it was written before the other books but was not published until way after them.

The Hobbit is definitely the first one; however, sometimes, I believe, it was written after the other books - if that is true, then that might be the feeling you are getting...
