I have been taking Yasmin (birth control) for 1 month and 3 weeks to be exact. Just the other day, but I dont remember when, I took an allergy pill. I was just told today that if you take cold medicine or allergy medicine, there is something in them both that can mess up my birth control like i wasnt even taking them at all. i just had sex yesterday. what are the chances i will get pregnant? if it only for the day that i take the allergy medicine that it will mess it up, does anyone know how long the allergy medicine will wear off. somebody please help me, i couldnt find anything on the internet or with the instructions my pills came with.

The chances are probably small but if you're really unsure and dont want to take any chances go to the pharmacy and get the " morning after pill " also know as Plan B...you take this within 72 hrs of having unprotected sex and it will prevent you from getting pregnant.......I've used it, its safe and efficient.....depending on where you live you may need a prescription

It's usually not cold or allergy medications that interfere with birth control, it's antibiotics. I couldn't find any mention of allergy medications on the Yahoo Health page for Yasmin. Your best bet is to contact a pharmacist or your doctor.

This excerpt was taken directly from the prescribing information for this BCP. It says NOTHING about antihistamines or other allergy medications. It DOES mention antibiotics and Saint John's Wort however.

If you took anything like Benadryl or Sudafed you're going to be fine.

Worst case, call your pharmacist and tell him/her that you're taking Yasmin AND you took "x" allergy medicine. Ask them if there is there cause for alarm?

"Certain drugs may interact with birth-control pills to make them less effective in preventing pregnancy or cause an increase in breakthrough bleeding. Such drugs include rifampin, drugs used for epilepsy such as barbiturates (for example, phenobarbital) and phenytoin (Dilantin is
one brand of this drug), phenylbutazone (Butazolidin is one brand) and possibly certain antibiotics. Herbal products containing St. John’s Wort (hypericum perforatum) may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. This may also result in breakthrough bleeding. You may need to use an additional method of contraception during any cycle in which you take drugs that can make oral contraceptives less
effective."

I never heard this about allergy meds.. I take allergy meds and affecting birth control is not listed as a side effect. Antibiotics will affect it. Try calling your ob/gyn and ask them. Also, the morning after pill is NOT SAFE. Don't buy that!! http://www.morningafterpill.org

Your best bet is to either ask your doctor, who know's information about your medication, or your pharmicist. Either one should be able to answer your question. The doctor especially since he or she is the one who prescribed the BC to you. I've never heard of allergy medicine affecting BC, but that doesn't mean it can't happen either.

I honestly have NO idea. But you can either call your doctor and run the question by him/her or wait 14-19 days after the last time you had sex and take a pregnancy test.

Call your doctor and tell him your worries, he is the only one who will know for sure and will be able to set your mind at ease.

Call the pharmacy, they can tell you and you don't have to wait for the doctor's office to open.
