Guild Wars http://www.guildwars.com (highly recommended!)
For a whole list of various types of free mmorpg's you can try here http://www.onrpg.com/games_categories/free.html
Then there's world of warcraft http://www.worldofwarcraft.com but I'm sure you know this one is probably the most expensive (pay to buy it at store, pay for monthly subscription to play it, pay for expansions to continue to play it....bleh!)

Of all the choices, GW is definately the best bet! You can play PvP, PvE, GvG...play by yourself, meet new people, join a guild....you can follow missions, earn titles, become a collector of rare and highly sought after items (ie - other players offer you a TON of gold, etc)....the options are limitless.
As far as GW goes, there are 3 campaigns out right now (with a 4th expected next month). They are stand alone games and do not require previous campaigns to play the most recent. There are added benefits to having more than one campaign but it's not necessary. Also, another advantage, is your characters are saved on the GW servers...this is good news...as long as GW is installed on a computer, you can input your name/pw and play from any computer and no more worries about whether or not you backed up your character properly or recently enough if you need to format your computer as the characters are saved on GW servers.

there are many great rpgs, dark eden is awesome, its similar to diablo 2 only with vampires slayers and some 3rd race that i forget what it is, eventually u will want to pay to play some of the more advanced levels but its worth it and buying time is cheap and easy, check it out

i think flyff is one of the best one and i guess runescape is okay but with less action and maple story is the one with 2-d and it kind of boring.

silkroad is alright... i think it gets kinda dull though... if you dont mind spending money then world of warcraft is pretty good and if you dont wanna spend that much money then guild wars is alright.
