take the car to the nearest autozone store. they can read the code for free & give you a better idea of what's wrong.

i own a repair shop and if your getting a code with it and it runs better with the light on,than when its off its probably an intermittent signal from a sensor, and it may not mean the sensor is bad on it but at times certain vehicles will run better because the computer will by pass a sensor once it gives off a bad signal to the computer,so this would explain why it runs good even with it on,the most common sensor for doing this is the 0-2 sensor, any car will run better if its bad and the computer by-passes the signal for it,but this only last until you cut it off, once the key is turned back on the computer re=sets its self again to run off the bad sensor, you will eventually have to get the one that's causing this to happen replaced, but for now it may not be hurting anything, but i would check in to getting it replaced as soon as i could, auto zone can tell you exactly which one it is,good luck,i hope this helps.

Sometimes after detecting a temporary problem the ecu stays on even when the engine is really fine.

To reset your computer unplug the battery (black cord, then red and when re-attaching red then black)

If the light comes back on get the ecu read to determine why it's going off.

good answer just above - make sure your gas tank cap is on tightly!

also - it could mean a sensor is showing a problem - you
would need to take it to a mechanic who puts a device on
a plug in your car to read what the error code is showing

then the mechanic can fix it!

You could have a sensor going out. Also, make sure you tighten your gas cap as tight as you can. When I don't tighten the gas cap on my car to "3 clicks" the check engine light comes on.
