To get the dirt out of the way and focus on their leadership abilities. They should list things like who they slept with, drugs, alchohol, traffic tickets etc. Things most people do and I don't really care about.

I totally agree and it would probably help the candidates out because if they admit to all the riff raft up front then they don't get nailed with a bomb just before the election that could destroy them. Getting it out early would give every body plenty of time to forget about the bad stuff.

The intense scrutiny of a candidate's personal life is what prevents many qualified and decent people from seeking an elected office. We all suffer when photogenic and well-rehearsed egotists take their place.

Why not encourage the media to raise their standards out of the gutter?

Seriously, it wouldn't make any difference. Those that crave dirt will continue to reward the news people for providing it, and those who could care less will continue to ignore it.
