The USA moved into more global imperialism after WW2. I thnk it had to do with taking advantage of the many defeated countries at the time... jumping on the opportunity.

The United States does not practice Imperialism. I was realized early on that these United States, and thusly the individual protections provided by it, could not be secured unless we furthered their franchise to other people in the World. Whenever we forget this, we are less safe. We ran England & Spain out of the Hemisphere, France stayed in Quebec. I don't believe Europe or Japan feel we run their Countries. We gave up in Vietnam, & Somalia. We didn't finish the tasks in Korea or Iraq, and now we are about to abandon the new popular government in Iraq, guaranteeing we will hand it over to Iran. So where is any example of Imperialism?

We are primarily an economic empire but we have used puppet governments for about 100 years, the early 1900's were filled with military interventions in Latin America to support American business .The following is quote by Maj. Gen. Smedly Butler 2 time winner of the congressional medal of honor and the most decorated US marine of his day.
I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested.

The US want to control terrorism by fighting the enemies in a country where they train and are being supported. Thus, there is really no imperialism but only preventive actions being made by America.

At the time (early 1900's) it was seen as mutually beneficial to the conquered territories and the homeland.
Of course, since 1946 we have moved away from imperialism, requesting of other nations no more land than is necessary to bury our dead.

There's this little know group in Washington called the Neocons (Neo Conservatives) who had that bright idea. But instead of callling it imperialism they call it regime change or spreading democracy or nation building.

We won the Cold War, and dismantled the USSR.
Aside from China, who didn't have comprable political or economic might at the time, the US was the only superpower.
The US let that overconfidence go to its head, and decided to play hall monitor for the rest of the world.

Bush's presidency is one of opportunity and happenstance.
It is a cloak, a sham, a meaningless pretend thing. He did not know it is called imperialism - he (and his minions) are just doing public relations, is all.
9/11 was a God-send for George, without it we would have seen Bush's failure earlier. He made good use of it.
