He has something hanging from his behind. Could it be a bowel movement although it has been there all day.

You mean a long string of "poo"? This is probably all you're seeing. You can try giving him some "alternate" foods like peas with the skin off, zucchini, cucumber, or blanched lettuce. It may take a while for him to realize these are food if you've only been giving him algae pellets. You may also have to weight them with a rock.
They also like shrimp pellets.

could be...but if it's still there in the morning I'd start suspecting a parasite or worm..

its poop or a worm.It will come off sooner or later.
