I need some help with my homework. In history, we are learning about slavery. The whole class is making a quilt (well out of paper, of course) and I need some ideas about what i should do on my patch. Remember, back then, they would make drawlings of good times, messages they only knew were really about freedom and all that kinds of stuff. I was thinking about drawling a picture of them on my patch of the paper quilt and thinking about putting a couple of african americans on there, in head locks like they had back then. But I don't know if thats too original or cheesy? lol. what do you think? thanks and I appreciate your help!

Oooh, your teacher is going to hate me, but I hope you're not learning about the so-called "Underground Railroad quilts." The whole thing is a huge myth. Historians who specialize in both quilts and in slavery agree that there is absolutely no historical evidence to support it. Slaves DID make quilts, some in more abstract patterns, some in traditional quilting blocks of the time. Check out the links below for more info.

If you can find a copy of the book Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt, I think you would get some great ideas. Here is a link to a website that might also inspire you.

i've done a very similar project, where i had to make a quilt out of paper. what i did was encorporate slavery with how they escaped (like with harriet tubman). from my research, they used some symbols, like rivers, and that represented that they were near a river. so i think you can use natural resources and s\things relating to how they escaped!
