Can Americans handle the truth or do they really like to be lied to so they don't have to hear any bad stuff that might ruin their day or upset them? Is keeping all Americans as happy as possible (even if it means keeping the truth from them) all that really matters? Would you rather be ignorant & happy or know the truth & be unhappy?

Pretty much always -- hands down, yes.

If you don't believe me, try speaking the absolute truth to everyone you interact with for one day. Then again, such attempts are likely to get you fired, maybe divorced, almost certainly cost you some friends.

People don't want to hear the truth. It's sad, but..... it's true.

I think the premise of your question was answered in the recent elections held in November. Apparently, the harsh truth is not a very effective vote getter.
Instead of the troop withdrawal as promised - we get a non binding resolution which amounts to no more than political grandstanding and a very feeble attempt in full filling their campaign promises.
Bottom line - pulling the troops out of Iraq before the interim government is capable of securing a reasonable amount of stability is not a viable option at this stage of the war - and people obviously didn't want to hear this during the campaign, and, instead, they were spoon fed the old "we need a change of direction" rhetoric, and they liked what they heard - regardless of the actual policy changes that would actually take place.

Americans do not like being lied to. Unfortunately, they have been for a very long time.

This starts from where their tax dollars goes to UFOs. From how the US government is involved in certain foreign affairs to if we are killing off certain species on the planet.

I would like to know the truth. If we are being controlled by aliens, let us know. If the world is going to be hit by an asteroid in the next few years, let us know.

It is nice and all to be happy but I want to go through life knowing the truth. Because in the long run, I would find it more exciting and make me more happier if I knew what really is going on.

Most love lies. Truth hurts and means you must do something. Of course at least half the country would rather have a lie that feels good than a truth.

My sister kept me in a bad situation that was to her advantage
by lying to me, instead of telling me the harsh truth. If I would have
known the harsh truth then I would have gotten out of the
situation myself. She hid the truth from me for the 8 years that
I was in this situation, and then finally told me the harsh truth
when I was out of the situation. By then it was too late to do
anything about it. I hope that I'm making sense here, but the
harsh truth was bad false assumptions that my sister had
about me, and she did not tell me the assumptions or get me
out of the situation. Instead, she lied to me, and lead me to
believe that everything was fine with her, when it really wasn't...

According to George Carlin, Americans have a lot of trouble handling the truth

Who would define that truth? Let's face it - you can put 3 people in a room and give them the exact same facts to read, and you'll likely get three different versions of the "truth".

And I think that most Americans prefer to remain ignorant. Just look at how many more Americans vote for American Idol than vote for government. Sad, isn't it??

The truth may hurt, yet it's a fact. Deal with it whether you like it or not, so I'd rather learn the harsh truth. Because it may be fixable, learning a lie won't do any good.

Personally, I prefer knowing the truth about things. I think most people in this country are too lazy and self centered to be aware of what truly goes on in this world.

Knowing the distasteful truth allows for there to be a problem to fix, which is constructive. Harping on it does nothing to fix anything. And Lying only covers it up, which is worse.
