If it's just those particular lines, go for humorous at the beginning, grading towards irritation or frustration at the end. These lines are spoken after the party, when Romeo has ditched his friends as they are leaving to return to Juliet and the balcony scene. They are in reference to Romeo having given them the slip, calling for him and trying to figure out where he's gone.

Imagine Mercutio is slightly drunk, pumped up from crashing the Capulet party and getting away with it, beginning to come down from the adrenaline rush.

If it's the rest of the play as well, Mercutio is generally quick to anger and quicker to laugh. He is the prince's relative (son, I believe) and can get away with just about anything. He's irreverant and cocky and used to getting his own way.

Hope that helped. Break a leg.

Mercutio is funny...AND serious...and, ultimately, tragic.

For the lines you've included here, I would say this much: Mercutio takes his friendship with Romeo VERY seriously. And, when he notices that Romeo is spending more and more time away from The Boys, his jealousy starts to get the better of him.

In this scene, Mercutio and Benvolio are out looking for Romeo, not knowing that Romeo has fallen in love with Juliet. Mercutio is making fun of Romeo, and making fun of the very notion that a Man would want to waste his time with a Woman when he could be hanging with his buddies.

Mercutio is Romeo's best friend in the play but is always humorous unless the situation is life or death, he is also a bit sarcastic. Keep in mind that Mercutio and Romeo are very close, so Mercutio isn't going to tease Romeo with much spite, he is quite a jokester... Final Verdict: The lines should seem funny, Mercutio doesn't need to be too serious with his lines.

:) Good luck with your audition, I hope it goes well.

Okay, well, when I heard the play on script in english class, it was read by some monotone guy who also played the role of all females in the same monotone voice. Anyway, the guy used a very active voice, so try to be very eccentric.

i'm studying romeo and juliet right now and mercutio is always kinda humerous until you really make him mad, like when him and tybalt fight. so you should do it more funny than serious.
