The muffler is full of a packing material, usually steel wool. The pipe that goes straight through had holes in it, perforations. Some of the sound is absorbed by the material which then results in the mufflers sound. I dont like the sound of these mufflers.... I prefer the sound of the chamber mufflers better.

i own a shop ,and this is because these are not really acting like a muffler for the vehicle ,even though the list as a muffler they just act like a baffle for most cars ,all they do is change the tone of the sound, they really don't restrict any exhaust like they should do,but they are street legal, and that's what counts, but that's the reason why, they figured out away to cheat on the restrictions on exhaust systems is basically what they done, good luck i hope this helps.

The reason is the less baffles the louder the noise and less restriction. Most vehicle computers know the exact back pressure in your exhaust system is designed for.....if you change your exhaust system you could get a engine light come on. Check with your manufacturer to ensure you don't void any waranties as well.

instead of using baffles, sport mufflers use a louvered tube thru the shell wrapped in fiberglass like home insulation.( thats why we used to call 'em 'glasspacks' ) the fiberglass deadens (some of) the noise without creating power-robbing backpressure. normally they kill the high-frequency noise, resulting in a more bassy sound.

makes the sound louder and deeper and gives less back pressure, it's almost like a glasspack.
